Last night our members were fortunate to be able to spend some quality time in the company of Dean Downing a Two Time British Criterium Champion and uniquely also a British Madison Champion on the track.
This was at the first of our “Evenings With” that the club is hosting throughout the year, we already have got some great speakers signed up who’s specialities range from Injury Management to Nutrition, from Professional athletes to inspirational stories.
But back to last night, we had a good turnout for Dean and everyone was eager to learn from an elite athlete of Dean’s calibre.
He started the evening with a brief introduction to his career from an 8 year old, through early successes and the odd failure. Big decisions, turning pro and then through representing GB on the track narrowly missing out on Olympic selection to a certain Sir Bradley Wiggins and on to team management, coaching and his media profile.
He managed to get all this in, in 5 minutes and the evening was now an open discussion. There were some fantastic questions which Dean answered in his inimitable relaxed lounge style. Amongst the top questions were “how do you have a pee on the bike?”, and “How can I convince my wife that I need another bike?”
But seriously, there was a huge amount of quality information and experiences that Dean was able to share with everyone. There will be a few who will go away realising that they need to take a good look at their own aspirations, priorities and training and others who will be inspired to push their boundaries a little bit further.
We think it is fair to say that Dean has won a few more fans and we would love to welcome him back again sometime.
From everyone at Doncaster Triathlon Club……..Thank you Dean.
